Reading Time: 5 minutes

I have recently spoken with a couple of businesses about noticing that they are NOT making use of Instagram’s business profile options.

One of them didn’t know it was an option, and the second said they kept ignoring the notification to change, because they didn’t have time.

Firstly, if you don’t know about Instagram’s business profile options and benefits… read on, secondly, it takes a couple of minutes to change and set up, and the benefits are WELL worth it.

And before we go any further, just in case you were wondering, business profiles are FREE! So no excuses!

What is an Instagram business profile?

Instagram offers business profiles as a way to better suit the requirements of businesses using Instagram, as opposed to individuals, using Instagram for personal use.

As I mentioned above, there is no charge to use Instagram as a business, and while some speculate, Instagram advises that business and personal profiles are not treated differently in the algorithm. It’s all about publishing great content and knowing your audience.

According to TechCrunch:

Instagram doesn’t give extra feed presence to personal accounts or business accounts, so switching won’t help your reach.

The experience using Instagram as a business and as a personal profile are very similar, with the few small differences being the BIG benefits listed below.

We also show you how to switch to a business profile. So read on!

Three reasons to use an Instagram business profile

1. Contact details and calls to action, right in your bio!

Instagram runs a very lean and clean profile, with the only clickable link being the one in your bio (see below for one other exception).

A HUGE benefit of using a business profile, is the ability to add THREE contact-based call to action buttons, right in your profile:

  1. Call
  2. Email
  3. Directions

Call: Click to call a designated telephone number, landline or mobile.

Email: Click to initiate an email directly to a designated email address.

Directions: Show a physical location in maps, based on the business location.

You can choose to use any of these options, making it easier for potential clients to contact you directly from Instagram.

There is also a wealth of other “action” buttons you can choose from based on various online platforms to make it even easier for people to do business with you.

2. Insights!

Regular readers will know how much I LOVE reporting and numbers, and really, if we’re using digital and social media marketing for business, then we want to know that it’s working, right?

Instagram Insights offers a wealth of valuable data about your audience and how they are responding to your content.

Not only can you see information such as the overall activity on your profile, but also incredibly useful information such as:

  • the reach of individual posts (how many people saw them)
  • the location, gender and age of your followers
  • and my favourite: when your followers tend to be on Instagram!

You can use this information to refine and improve your Instagram updates, creating and sharing content that resonates with your audience, posting it at times that they are most likely to see it!

Simply tap the three horizontal lines in the top right corner of the app to open the right hand side menu, and then click on Insights to view.

3. Advertising options!

Another benefit of using a business profile instead of a personal profile is the opportunity to make use of Instagram advertising, sharing your posts and updates to reach and engage new audiences.

Ads can either be created and managed directly through Instagram, by clicking the “Promotions” button when viewing your own business profile, or through Facebook’s Ads Manager (as Facebook owns Instagram).

While this is a huge benefit, I don’t recommend advertising for advertising’s sake. You need to have a clear idea of what you hope to achieve, who you are trying to reach and connect with, and engaging content that those people are likely to reach and engage with.

It’s Instagram, even if it is an ad, it’s still got to look good. No excuses.

Bonus reasons:

Links in Instagram stories (for accounts with more than 10,000 followers)

I mentioned above that there is only one clickable link available in Instagram, and it’s true, there is only one main one for all profiles. However, Instagram business profiles are able to add clickable links in their Instagram stories, providing they have more than 10,000 followers.

Ability to schedule content updates

Business profiles can also use approved tools such as Sprout Social to schedule posts to publish at a specific time.

Pretty good reasons, huh?

So if you haven’t switched your profile yet, here’s how…

How to switch to an Instagram business profile

  1. Visit your Instagram profile
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines in the top right hand corner to open the right hand side menu
  3. Tap on the Settings cog at the base
  4. Scroll down to the “Switch to Business Profile” option and tap on it
  5. If you have a Facebook Business Page, you will be prompted to connect it to your new business account
    1. This will allow you to use your Instagram business profile to create ads in Facebook’s Ads Manager, as well as copy over information such as your address and category/ies from your Facebook Page that you can then edit (if required)
    2. If you DON’T connect a Facebook Page, Facebook will automatically create one for you based on your Instagram profile details that you can then claim and edit or unpublish
  6. Choose a category and sub-category (if not automatically selected from your Facebook Page)
  7. Review your contact details
  8. Click Done

And voila!

How to switch between profiles on Instagram

You can manage up to five different Instagram profiles from the Instagram app.

This makes it easy to toggle between your personal and business profile without having to log in and out.

To add additional Instagram accounts to your Instagram app:

  1. Visit your Instagram profile
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines in the top right-hand corner to open the right-hand side menu
  3. Tap on the Settings cog at the base
  4. Scroll ALL the way down to the bottom to the Logins section
  5. Tap “Add Account”
  6. Enter the username and password for the additional profile
  7. And save

Now you can tap the username listed at the top of the app to reveal a list of logged in profiles and switch between.
