And where I am, it’s a welcome relief after what has felt like a long, cold winter.
It is also a great time to do a quick review and update of your business, and even personal, digital and social media accounts!
This doesn’t have to be an arduous process. I’ve listed my recommendations below, and most will only take a couple of minutes each. Take a quick skim through, and pick out a few that you can do today to freshen up your accounts. You can then tackle the others over the next week or two!
How to update your website
Review your About page; is the content still relevant? Can you make any quick updates to reflect your current situation and focus?
Review your Team page; are there any new people you need to add? Anyone who needs to be removed? Profiles that need to be updated?
Review your Products/Services; are there any that need to be removed? Or added? Or updated?
Review your Contact page; are all of your contact details up to date?
Review your social media channel links; are there any new account logos and links, or feeds that you can add? Or channels that you don’t use as actively anymore that can be removed from the website?
Review your Google Analytics; who has Admin access? Is there anyone who can be removed? Or anyone else who should be added?
Review your website hosting, DNS hosting and domain registration; when are they due to expire? Put reminders in your calendar for the month prior so you are not taken by surprise. Are your current hosting packages still suitable? If you want to move to a new host or registrar, it’s best to do this a couple of months before they are due to expire.
Review users who can access your website CMS; is there anyone who can be removed? Or anyone else who should be added?
For WordPress websites, review your plugins and theme; are there any updates available for your plugins or website theme? Remember to take a back up of your website first! For a good, free back up plugin, I recommend BackWPup. If you are unsure about this, ask your developer. If your plugins or theme haven’t been updated for a while, there may be some issues.
Review your website CMS; is an update available? It’s best to keep your CMS up to date to avoid security and display issues. However if you are unsure about this, ask your developer. If your CMS hasn’t been updated for a while, there may be some issues. And ALWAYS back up your site before running a CMS update.
How to update your social media channels
Review your profile pictures and header/cover photos; is it time for an update? This applies to your personal accounts as well, especially your LinkedIn profile. Do you have a new headshot you can use?
Review your bios and channel descriptions (About section for Facebook Pages); is the content still relevant? Can you make any quick updates to reflect your current situation and focus?
Update your passwords! (and remember to give the new one to anyone who may need access).
Review your admins (for Facebook Pages, LinkedIn company pages and Google+ Pages); who is an admin? Is there anyone who can be removed, or have their role changed? Is there anyone who should be added?
Review your notifications; getting annoyed with irrelevant email or push notifications from some accounts? Edit your settings now! Make sure you’re only receiving what is relevant, otherwise you can get in the habit of ignoring everything, and might miss something important.
Review the Pages and accounts you like and follow (for both personal and business accounts); this can take a little while, but it’s worthwhile scrolling through and seeing if there are any that can be removed. They might be preventing you from seeing content that you are actually interested in!
Review what Apps have access to your Twitter account; I just did this and it gave me a shock! If you log into your Twitter account via twitter.com, visit “Settings” and “Apps” you will see all apps that you have granted access to your Twitter account. If there are any that are no longer required, simply click “Revoke Access”. This is really useful for business accounts as this may still grant access to previous managers via their HootSuite or other social media management tools.
