Barossa Pathways to Employment Expo: Digital Media
This month I represented the “Digital Media” career path at the Barossa Pathways to Employment careers expo.
It was a huge responsibility and daunting task to try and sum up the many, varied and ever-changing career opportunities available in 20 minutes allowed.
What struck me most was that I was being asked to speak about a career path that I didn’t consciously (or even unconsciously for that matter) set out to take when I was in high school.
Then when I thought about it more, I realised that no one whom I admire and work within the industry did! We all started off somewhere else, and through our interest and experiences have ended up here.
So I put it out on my Facebook Page, asking people who are working in the industry how they got here, and what they think are the most important skills required to succeed.
Overwhelmingly people responded that the most important skills weren’t the digital ones, as they could be learned.
More important was:
- having an understanding of the business or organisation and its goals;
- communications, including basic spelling and grammar;
- a genuine interest in people, and customer service;
- being able to develop and implement a strategy, and when required, adjust it quickly;
- and more.
Thank you to everyone who contributed, I’ve included some quotes in the final presentation below.
